Nor can the public record alone establish whether the coherence of the collection was the direct cause of the 100% sell-through.

It is better understood as a special sale in which several conditions overlapped: the coherence of the body of work, the wide price range, the advance publicity, the preview, and interest in Rosanjin as an artist.
(Source: Special Kitaōji Rosanjin Auction Announcement — Shinwa Wise Holdings Co., Ltd.)

The official announcement also notes that Rosanjin, in “Rosanjin Michi,” included a piece of writing titled “Tableware is the kimono of food,” discussing the relationship between cooking and the vessel.

As Kogei Japonica’s editor, what I want to establish before dealing with prices is that Rosanjin’s vessels were not conceived solely as objects for viewing. By contrast, the sometsuke flower vessel sold within its estimate.

What to be careful of here is not to judge a work’s value or a price rise by the size of the multiple alone. An estimate is an advance reference price and does not bind the actual result.

What the official results confirm is the work information, the estimate, the hammer price, and the sale price including premium only. They do not tell us the direct reason the bidding climbed, or which factor bidders valued most highly.

Definition Box: The Two Numbers in a “Sale Price”

When comparing auction results, you need to distinguish the “hammer price,” the “price listed in the results materials,” and the “buyer’s final payment.”

Hammer price: the bid that stood at the moment the auctioneer’s hammer fell. Shipping, packing, and insurance may also be required separately.

For example, the Musashino folding screen’s hammer price was ¥19.5 million. Shinwa’s official results bulletin, meanwhile, lists ¥22,425,000 as the sale price including buyer’s premium only.

The company’s current bidding guide also explains that for the buyer’s payment, an amount equal to 16.5% is added to the hammer price as buyer’s premium plus consumption tax on that premium.

So the “sale price” listed in a results bulletin does not necessarily match the buyer’s final total payment.

When researching prices, always confirm which price stage the number you are comparing represents.
(Source: Bidding Guide — Shinwa Auction)

The Reason for a High Sale Price Is Not the Artist’s Name Alone

When looking at the sale price of a craft work, you need to check not only the artist’s name but the vessel type, the period of making, the technique, the dimensions, the provenance, the tomobako, the condition, the rarity, and the format of the sale.

These are not “settled causes” that directly explain this sale’s prices, however. They are axes for checking, based on the public record.

For instance, both the camellia bowl and the sometsuke flower vessel have a signature and a tomobako recorded in the official materials. Even so, there was a large gap in their hammer prices.

This shows that the mere presence of a tomobako cannot explain a high sale price. Size, format, design, the work’s place within the artist’s output, how often it appears on the market, the estimate, and the competitive bidding on the day all have to be weighed together.

The Musashino folding screen reaching about 9.8 times its high estimate is also worth noting. To grasp Rosanjin’s market through ceramics alone is to miss the valuation of his calligraphy, painting, and screens.

Rosanjin was an artist who crossed not only ceramics but calligraphy, seal-carving (tenkoku), painting, and cooking. In the market, too, the rarity of works and the buyers for them may differ by field of expression.

How Provenance and Box Inscriptions Affect Price

Provenance, the tomobako, and the box inscription are important information about a work, but on their own they do not guarantee authenticity or price.

A tomobako is, as a rule, a box the artist prepares to match the work, inscribed with the work’s name, signature, and the like. Hakogaki refers to the information written on the box — the maker’s name, the work’s name, the origin, and so on.

The tomobako and the hakogaki can be related, but they are not the same thing. And the mere presence of a tomobako cannot establish a work as genuine.

The pairing of box and work, the handwriting, the seal, the period in which the box was made, and whether it is a later replacement box all need several points of checking.

Provenance is the history of a work’s ownership, exhibition, publication, and transactions. Information that a single collector owned a work must be distinguished from a provenance in which the route of acquisition can be confirmed continuously.

Item to check

Meaning

Points to note

Tomobako

As a rule, a box prepared and signed by the artist

The box alone does not settle authenticity

Hakogaki

The work’s name, maker’s name, origin, etc. written on the box

Check who wrote it, and when

Provenance

History of ownership, exhibition, transactions, etc.

The single phrase “formerly owned by” is not a complete history

Authentication materials

Materials issued by an authentication or registration body, etc.

Check the issuing body and the scope of what is certified

Signature / seal

The signature or seal on the work itself

A signature alone cannot establish authenticity

The state of preservation is also an important item to check. For ceramics, this means checking chips, cracks, hairlines (nyū), abrasion, glaze loss, adhesion, and repairs.

How much preservation state affected the price of this sale’s major lots, however, cannot be judged from the public results alone. If you are actually considering a purchase, you need to examine the piece in person at the preview and request a condition report.

What an Estimate Ratio Says About an “Upset”

What an estimate ratio shows is how far the advance reference price and the actual auction result diverged. It cannot identify the reason a price climbed.

An estimate is a reference price range the auction house presents based on the work’s condition, market conditions, and comparable examples. It does not guarantee the sale price and does not bind the actual result.

When the high estimate is greatly exceeded, you can infer that several bidders competed. But whether that competition arose from rarity, provenance, design, size, or the artist’s standing cannot be told from the multiple alone.

The Musashino folding screen and the “Seikan” lacquered plaque both, in the official materials, carry a Kuroda Tōtōan label. So their totals and sell-through rates cannot be treated directly as an index of the Japanese craft market.

What the comparison shows is that a single-collection sale and an ordinary sale differ in purpose, in the makeup of the lots, in price range, and in the buyers who gather.

A sale with a low sell-through rate can also produce high sale prices and strong competitive bidding. At the 80th “Modern and Contemporary Art” sale, Dōmoto Hisao’s “Solution de Continuité No.3” was officially announced as selling for ¥32.2 million against an estimate of ¥2 million–¥3 million.

This is an example of the market’s selectivity: strong demand concentrates on some works while, for other lots, no sale is made. The overall sell-through rate of a sale cannot tell you about demand for an individual work.

Incidentally, the expression “leftover” is not appropriate, since it gives the impression that a work’s value has been denied. In auctions this is described as “unsold” or “bought-in.”

What to Watch in the July 2026 Auctions

The July 2026 results will be material for testing whether the price-formation features seen in the first half recur in ordinary sales. The direct reason an individual work’s price rose, however, cannot be established from the official results alone.

What is the difference between the hammer price and the sale price?

The hammer price is the bid that stood at auction. The sale price in the results materials may include the buyer’s premium, but the tax treatment differs by material and by company.

Can a tomobako alone establish that a work is genuine?

A tomobako is important reference information, but it cannot establish authenticity on its own. The pairing of box and work, the handwriting, the seal, the period, and authentication materials are checked together.

Do hakogaki and tomobako mean the same thing?

They are not the same. A tomobako is, as a rule, a box prepared and signed by the artist; hakogaki refers to the work’s name, maker’s name, origin, etc. written on the box.

If a work greatly exceeds its estimate, does that mean the market has risen?

A single result cannot be judged as a lasting rise in the market.
