That does not mean her connection to tradition is superficial. How an artist learns technique and how an artist interprets cultural references are separate questions.

Her official profile describes an approach that connects myth and memory with contemporary experience. The work can be read as a practice that draws on cultural forms while asking what they mean to her now.
(Source: ABOUT | Noe Kuremoto)

Work Between Art, Design and Craft

There is no need to decide in advance whether Kuremoto’s work is art, design or craft. Look at the hand-building and you see technique; look at the vessel forms and you see a relationship with function; look at the subjects and their background and you see the concerns that drive the artist.

In my view, an artist’s individual voice emerges as much through formal decisions as through the choice of subject. Two artists drawing on the same folk tale will arrive at different work depending on what they keep, what they leave out, and which contours and structures they choose.

The way into Kuremoto’s ceramics is to go one step beyond “she uses Japanese stories” and ask how those stories shape the form of the vessel and the act of making.

What Is PAD London, and How Was Kuremoto’s Work Presented There?

PAD London is a fair for historical and contemporary design. Kuremoto’s work was presented not in a setting confined to craft, but in one concerned with collecting and with how objects relate to space.

PAD London 2026 was held in Berkeley Square, London, from 13 to 18 October. Its elongated contour recalls a bird, and each numbered work is described as an individually made one-off.
(Source: Crane wife 2 | Galerie Boketto)

One way in is to look at where the bird-like form and the structure of the vessel overlap. How does a narrow section lead into the fuller body of the vessel? Which way does the opening face? Return to images of the work after reading the story, and the contours begin to read differently.

Being drawn to the form without knowing the story is an entirely natural first encounter. Interest in the form leads to the story, and the story sends you back to the form; that movement back and forth is how a relationship with the work deepens.

What Is the Folk Tale Tsuru Nyōbō?

The Tottori Prefectural Museum’s commentary on local folk tales draws on the classification in Nihon Mukashibanashi Taisei, the folklorist Keigo Seki’s standard catalogue of Japanese folk tales, to outline the plot of Tsuru Nyōbō: a rescued crane becomes a man’s wife in human form, weaves cloth at the loom, and leaves once her true identity is discovered. The version recorded on the same page features an elderly couple instead, showing that the story has been told in more than one form.
(Source: Tsuru no Ongaeshi (Takahashi, Daisen) | Tottori Prefectural Museum)

Knowing the story is not the same as knowing which version the artist drew on. A better anchor is what the gallery and the artist themselves say, with questions of devotion, transformation and parting explored through the form.

Project Shodō: Making Guided by Calligraphy

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/DcshP61gEWP/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF; It presents the work as arising from a habit of making one piece each day, and as valuing small actions repeated over time above the pursuit of perfection.
(Source: Shodō | Homo Faber)

With this series, rather than searching for resemblances to particular characters, try following the sequence of forms and the changes of direction as movements of the hand. Attention can then go both to the finished object and to the act that produced it.

The reference to calligraphy concerns the act of forming; drying and firing still follow as separate stages of the ceramic process.

Turning Limited Studio Time into Daily Practice

Speaking to Wallpaper*, Kuremoto described how little time she has for making while raising children, and a daily practice of handling clay as if drawing in the air.
(Source: Noe Kuremoto explores Japan’s mythology at PAD London 2026 | Wallpaper*)

I read in this a decision to shape a working method around the demands of daily life. It is not only how much time can be given to the work, but what is done in that time and how it is sustained, that sets the terms of expression.

If the value of handwork is measured only by the hours spent on it, decisions like this become hard to see. Repetition, setting limits and adjusting one’s expectations of finish are also choices that keep a practice going.

Jōmon: Bringing the Jōmon Period into Present Experience

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/DbTSDLOAFxv/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF; Check the work’s description and ask the artist or gallery about any details that matter to you.

If the texture of a surface interests you, for example, look at close-up images or ask for documentation of the making. Keeping to the exact wording of each work’s listing shows precisely what has been confirmed for that piece.

For Crane wife 2, the official listing supports describing it as stoneware. Extending a material named for one work to an entire series, or to all of the artist’s output, is best avoided.

A material label does not establish how a piece can be used. A work described as stoneware may be intended for display rather than for holding water, serving food or standing outdoors. Considering not only what a form represents but the act that produces it changes how the work can be seen.

Whatever the starting point, I want to look past the explanation that something is “Japanese” and ask what the artist chose, and how she turned it into form. She studied fine art in London and, through hand-building, makes work that connects cultural memory with present-day experience.

Q2. What materials and techniques does she use?

Hand-building methods, including coil-building and slab-building, are documented. Materials vary by work, but Crane wife 2 and the Shodō listed on Homo Faber are both described as stoneware.

Q3. Where can I see or buy her work?

Through the artist’s official website, or the galleries handling the works you are interested in.
