Its inspiration was Nishijin tsumekaki hon-tsuzure-ori, a tapestry technique in which artisans use their fingernails to pack the weft threads. Among Nishijin’s oldest weaving traditions, it is also regarded as one of its finest. ARCELF explored its techniques and workshop environment through a collaboration with Soshitsu Tsuzureen in Kyoto’s Nishijin district.

The tension of taut warp threads, tangled yarn, unevenly arranged bobbins, fingernails filed into weaving tools, and the subtle shifts of light across woven surfaces: ARCELF gathers these fragments of beauty from the workshop and translates them into the forms and textures of metal.

Kikuo Hirano, who leads Soshitsu Tsuzureen, began weaving at 15 and has devoted 72 years to tsuzure-ori. Alongside its jewelry, ARCELF archives techniques, artisans’ words, and records of the making process, sharing the workshop’s memories with those who wear its pieces.

Born and raised in Kyoto, Yukari Fujii grew up surrounded by textiles and craft, influenced by her mother, a textile designer, and relatives in the kimono trade. She began her career at ISSEY MIYAKE in retail and visual merchandising before becoming an independent editor and writer.

Her work spans editorial planning, interviews, writing, and editing for fashion publications including VOGUE JAPAN, as well as brands’ own media platforms. Through the volunteer project JAPAN MADE, she visited workshops across Japan, deepening her understanding of materials, techniques, and their cultural contexts.

Reporting from these workshops brought her face to face with the loss of exceptional skills and cultural traditions, and the challenges of sustaining them. Seeking to return lasting value to craft communities through more than storytelling alone, she founded ARCELF in January 2026. Through collaborations with artisans across Japan, she creates pieces that connect Japanese craft with the wider world.

Illuminating Japanese Tradition with Innovation and Pride

TOKIMEKI Inc. is a brand development and management company that redefines Japanese traditional craftsmanship for contemporary life, creating brands with the potential to resonate with audiences around the world.

For many years, craftspeople in Japan’s traditional craft industries have taken on a wide range of responsibilities beyond making objects, including business management, product planning, design, and sales. Drawing inspiration from the brand management practices of leading global luxury houses, TOKIMEKI helps create an environment in which craftspeople can focus on their skills and the art of making.

By carefully exploring the distinctive techniques and histories of individual factories and workshops, TOKIMEKI develops integrated strategies encompassing marketing, design, product development, and sales. Rather than simply selling craft products, the company focuses on building sustainable brands that can continue to deliver value over time.

In addition to developing and managing its own brands, TOKIMEKI provides product development for corporate clients, crowdfunding support, spatial design, operational improvement, and digital transformation support. Through these initiatives, the company is building a framework that enables Japanese craftsmanship to be passed on to future generations.

Business

1.
