Japanese Craft & Contemporary Jewelry
Re-Edit Fragments
Fragments of Beauty, Reimagined
ARCELF is a Japanese jewelry brand that reimagines artisans’ handwork, Japanese landscapes, and the materials and memories passed down through generations as contemporary jewelry.
Every collection begins with an encounter with a craft tradition. Visiting workshops across Japan, ARCELF explores not only materials and techniques, but also local culture, landscapes, and artisans’ ideas, bringing these discoveries into contemporary jewelry.
The brand aims to help craft endure by creating pieces people want to wear today. By returning value to the workshops behind them, ARCELF seeks to sustain artisans’ livelihoods and support the passing of skills to the next generation.
Fragments of Japanese Beauty, Reimagined
A future for craft, sustained by the people who continue to choose it.
Artisans’ handwork, local landscapes, inherited materials, and memories: ARCELF brings these elements into jewelry people want to wear now, giving them a place in the present as well as a connection to the past.
Each piece offers a connection to a remembered place or moment. Across Japan, ARCELF is developing a model that brings income and commissions to both craft and jewelry makers, helping support new work and the next generation of artisans.
New Life for Materials, Skills, and Memories
Semiprecious stones polished by hand in Japan, Nishijin weaving techniques, rare lacquer and ceramics, and metals shaped by time: ARCELF looks beyond decorative motifs to the structures, light, and knowledge held in artisans’ hands, translating them into new forms to be worn.
Jewelry Begins with Craft
Craft Research
Visiting craft regions and workshops across Japan to study materials, techniques, tools, working processes, and the local culture that shapes them.
Collaboration
Working directly with artisans and workshops wherever possible, through ongoing dialogue that brings their skills and aesthetic sensibilities into each piece.
Jewelry Design
Drawing on the forms, structures, textures, light, and memories found in workshops to create jewelry for contemporary life.
Made in Japan
Every piece is made to order in Japan. Jewelry makers and craft artisans bring their expertise to each work, with close attention to material and expression.
Choosing a piece creates work for an artisan. The income it generates can support the workshop’s next commission and the passing on of skills. ARCELF aims to build lasting relationships in which value flows back to both craft and jewelry makers.
Discovering Nishijin Tapestry Weaving
Soshitsu Tsuzureen × ARCELF
The first collection began in Kyoto, where founder Yukari Fujii was born and raised. Its inspiration was Nishijin tsumekaki hon-tsuzure-ori, a tapestry technique in which artisans use their fingernails to pack the weft threads. Among Nishijin’s oldest weaving traditions, it is also regarded as one of its finest. ARCELF explored its techniques and workshop environment through a collaboration with Soshitsu Tsuzureen in Kyoto’s Nishijin district.
The tension of taut warp threads, tangled yarn, unevenly arranged bobbins, fingernails filed into weaving tools, and the subtle shifts of light across woven surfaces: ARCELF gathers these fragments of beauty from the workshop and translates them into the forms and textures of metal.
Kikuo Hirano, who leads Soshitsu Tsuzureen, began weaving at 15 and has devoted 72 years to tsuzure-ori. Alongside its jewelry, ARCELF archives techniques, artisans’ words, and records of the making process, sharing the workshop’s memories with those who wear its pieces.
“I want to enjoy what I do and share that enjoyment with others. That is my greatest wish.”
Kikuo Hirano, Soshitsu Tsuzureen
TSUZURE - Loose End
From Woven Thread to Metal and Light
Developed over time through close dialogue with artisans, the first collection captures the subtleties of weaving in metal. The pieces use 925 sterling silver with a choice of 10K gold vermeil or rhodium plating. Selected designs can also be ordered in 10K gold, 18K gold, or platinum.
TSUZURE / ORI
Varied finishes and spiral forms evoke uneven layers of wound thread, tonal gradations in weaving, and the structure of tsuzure-ori, whose pattern appears on both sides.
TSUZURE — Bloom
A ring inspired by the flower-like fullness of silk bundles piled beside an artisan. Its sculptural form was created by Katsuhiko Sakamoto, a recipient of Japan’s Contemporary Master Craftsman distinction.
ORI — Spiral
A band of varying width and a sequence of diamonds capture the way silk threads gather into a spiral, gradually taking shape.
Thread and Space, Shaped to Be Worn
Fine, continuous threads, the depth created by overlapping layers, and the two faces of a woven textile: the jewelry’s contours, finishes, and stone settings quietly reflect the materials and structures encountered in the Nishijin workshop.
Meet the Founder
Yukari Fujii
Founder / Designer
藤井 由香里
Born and raised in Kyoto, Yukari Fujii grew up surrounded by textiles and craft, influenced by her mother, a textile designer, and relatives in the kimono trade. She began her career at ISSEY MIYAKE in retail and visual merchandising before becoming an independent editor and writer.
Her work spans editorial planning, interviews, writing, and editing for fashion publications including VOGUE JAPAN, as well as brands’ own media platforms. Through the volunteer project JAPAN MADE, she visited workshops across Japan, deepening her understanding of materials, techniques, and their cultural contexts.
Reporting from these workshops brought her face to face with the loss of exceptional skills and cultural traditions, and the challenges of sustaining them. Seeking to return lasting value to craft communities through more than storytelling alone, she founded ARCELF in January 2026. Through collaborations with artisans across Japan, she creates pieces that connect Japanese craft with the wider world.
to something we want to wear today.
One person’s choice brings a piece into being and creates a workshop’s next commission. ARCELF aims to extend this cycle across Japan, giving craft a natural place in contemporary life and opening new paths to future generations and audiences around the world.
