Rooted in the work of a lacquer artisan
Bunpeido traces its origins to lacquer artisan Bunpei Ohara in 1914. Since then, it has valued both the precision of the turned wooden forms and the quality of their lacquer finishes and decoration.
On Yuge Kaido in Yamanaka Onsen, the Shitsugei Bunpeido gallery offers tableware for daily use alongside distinctive pieces from the region and works by local craftspeople.
Wood, lacquer, and the art of maki-e
Yamanaka lacquerware grew out of the region’s woodturning expertise. Bunpeido’s pieces reflect this range of skills, from finishes that reveal the grain to colored lacquer and maki-e designs.

Yamanaka’s craft traditions include thin-walled turning and decorative turning. The contours of a vessel and the fine grooves on its surface reveal the skill that goes into shaping the wood.
