Seiho-do

Founded in 1964 and incorporated in 1975, Seiho-do manufactures Kutani ware, supplies retailers across Japan, and develops original products.

Its signature Kutani Wa Glass collection brings Kutani porcelain together with hand-blown glass, including Edo glass from Tokyo. Hand-painted porcelain stems and bases lend color and detail to the transparent glass above.

The technique used to bond these different materials is central to the collection. According to Seiho-do’s official website, Kutani Wa Glass received a 2006 Good Design Award in the New Frontier Design category.

The range includes shapes for chilled sake, wine, beer, and desserts. Alongside its standard collection, Seiho-do offers customizable combinations of shape, painted design, and glass style, made to order from the available options.

Seiho-do’s Repair Glass collection repurposes damaged wine glasses, using a Kutani porcelain connector to join the glass bowl and stem. The collection applies the bonding techniques developed for Kutani Wa Glass.

Each piece combines the character of the original glass with the painted detail of Kutani porcelain. These upcycled glasses are presented as one-of-a-kind pieces in the official online shop.

Gallery Tosokan, the shop and showroom at Seiho-do’s headquarters in Nomi, displays Kutani Wa Glass and Kutani ware. Visitors can see the colors and forms in person before choosing a piece.

Painting workshops, available by reservation, let visitors decorate a Kutani porcelain blank or the porcelain component of a Kutani Wa Glass piece. With staff guidance and the same tools used by artisans, participants discover how painted colors develop during firing. For Kutani Wa Glass, the glass component is attached after the porcelain has been fired.
